Structural Insulated Panels (SIP)

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) offer a high-performance, prefabricated building system for walls, roofs, and floors in residential and commercial construction. SIPs are composed of an insulating foam core (typically EPS, or Polyurethane) sandwiched between two structural facings, most commonly Oriented Strand Board (OSB).

Key Benefits & Technical Attributes of SIPs:

  • Superior Energy Efficiency: SIPs create a highly airtight building envelope with continuous insulation, leading to an approximate 50% reduction in heating and cooling energy consumption compared to traditional stud framing. This makes them a top choice for energy-efficient construction.

  • Exceptional Structural Strength: SIPs are engineered to withstand axial, shear, and out-of-plane flexural loads. Their structure is analogous to a wide-flange steel column, providing inherent strength. They are suitable for use as shear walls across all seismic design categories.

  • Expedited On-site Construction: The prefabricated nature of SIPs means faster installation, leading to savings in time, capital, and labor resources.

  • Precision Fabrication: Panels are precision-fabricated under controlled factory conditions, accommodating a wide spectrum of architectural designs.

SIP FAQs.

Q: Are SIPs a new building component?

A: Certainly not.  In fact, they’ve been around for more than 70 years.  SIP development began in the late 1940’s.

Q: Are SIPs expensive?

A: Building with SIPs is actually an excellent way to save money in several ways:

  • Labor Costs

  • Job Site Waste

  • Energy Savings

  • Speed of Construction

  • Downsizing of Mechanicals

  • Meet Healty home standards

  • Exceed blower door test requirements.

  • Better substrate for exterior and interior finishing materials.

  • Faster, easier window and door install: CNC cuts rough openings to the exact manufacturer's specifications.

Q: Is wiring a SIP structure difficult?

A: No.  Skilled electricians can wire a  SIP building quickly, easily and cost-effectively using innovative factory-installed electrical chases.

Q: Are SIPs versatile in design?

A: SIPs are flexible and customized. They can be used for nearly any building design. The strength of SIPs allow for a myriad of design options which might not be possible with other building methods.
