Timbercraft Offers a Wide Variety of Bent Styles

Understanding Timbercraft’s Bent Profiles: A Guide to Classic Timber Frame Forms

In timber frame construction, the bent is one of the most defining structural and aesthetic elements. A bent is essentially a cross-sectional frame—an assembly of posts, beams, and braces—that repeats along the length of the structure. The profile of each bent influences not only the engineering of the frame but also the finished look and character of the home.

At Timbercraft, we handcraft a variety of bent styles to match architectural goals, span requirements, and design aesthetics. Below is an overview of the most common bent profiles we create and how each contributes to the overall structure.

1. Simple Bent

A simple bent, sometimes called a common bent, consists of two main posts and a tie beam connecting them horizontally, often supported with diagonal braces.
Best for: straightforward, economical designs, smaller spans, and traditional layouts.
Appearance: clean, strong lines with minimal ornamentation—ideal for understated timber frame aesthetics.

2. King Post Bent

A king post bent introduces a central vertical post reaching from the tie beam to the peak of the rafters.
Best for: moderate spans, symmetrical layouts, and homes seeking a classic timber frame look.
Appearance: ageless and balanced, with a focal point at the king post.

3. King Post Bent with Struts

This profile adds angled struts between the king post and the rafters or tie beam.
Best for: longer spans where added support is needed, or when a more decorative appearance is desired.
Appearance: more visually compelling than a simple king post; struts create shape and movement in the roofline.

4. Queen Post Bent

A queen post bent replaces the single center post with two vertical posts spaced apart and connected by a horizontal straining beam.
Best for: wider spans, higher ceilings, and open great rooms.
Appearance: opens up the center of the space, giving a broad, airy feel—especially popular in great rooms and vaulted spaces.

5. King and Queen Post Combination

Some designs incorporate both a center king post and two outer queen posts, blending structural strength with dramatic architectural interest.
Best for: large structures requiring enhanced support without compromising visual appeal.
Appearance: bold, complex, and highly architectural—an ideal choice for statement spaces.

6. Scissor Truss

A scissor truss features two bottom chords that cross like a pair of scissors, rising upward to meet the rafters.
Best for: creating vaulted ceilings without requiring a classic tie beam, ideal for open-concept living areas.
Appearance: dynamic diagonal lines that lift the eye upward and add a sense of height and motion.

7. Hammer Beam Bent

The hammer beam is one of the most dramatic and historic bent forms. Instead of a continuous tie beam, short horizontal “hammer beams” project from the tops of the posts and support upward braces that meet the rafters.
Best for: large, cathedral-like spaces; great rooms; public or ceremonial structures.
Appearance: breathtaking. Hammer beams create soaring ceilings, intricate joinery, and a sense of grandeur unmatched by other bent profiles.

Each bent profile offers its own blend of structural capability and architectural expression.
