    Frame Fabrication: Timbercraft Homes

Based on a house designed in 1920 by California architect, Bernard Maybeck, this Timber-frame home is both primary residence and work place for a fiber artist.

Loft Living spaces are arranged around a central, enclosed courtyard, as they would be in a traditional northern European farmhouse.

The plan includes three separate activity zones: living room-studio and master bedroom loft, a guest suite and library; and a single car garage. The simple geometry of the U-shaped house is accented by a steeply pitched roof, gray stucco walls and tall window bays.

    Bath

The reclaimed Douglas fir timber frame and thoughtfully designed interior finishes share the common language of fine craftsmanship.

    Kitchen

Custom built cherry cabinets and granite countertops are examples of the beautiful natural materials and fine craftsmanship evident in every detail of the house.

    Loom

The owner is surrounded by the tools and materials of her craft; looms, spinning wheels and skeins of homespun wool.

    Great Room

The steeply pitched timber-framed ceiling with cruck arches is reminiscent of a 12th century European barn.

    Staircase

The built-in, under-the-stair storage cabinet has the simple lines of a Japanese tansu, creating a comfortable blend of Asian and European design elements.

The warmth of Douglas fir timbers and cherry stair railings are complimented by the earth toned, plaster walls and acid etched, concrete floors cut into squares to resemble large tiles.
